Self-Care
Observing Young Children
There are many things to learn from observing children with a family child care program. From beginner-level sessions (like the Set One, OA session Power in Your Pocket: Techniques for Observing Children) that focus on discovering some of the benefits observations provide, identifying some simple tools that can be used to track those observations, and summarizing how to use them in their own environments, to more in-depth training sessions (like the Set Two, OA session NOTEworthy Observation Techniques: Exploring Accurate and Objective Observation Methods in a Family Child Care Setting) that include hands-on practice comparing and recording child observation data and creating plans that support using it to benefit outcomes within their own programs.
While incredibly rewarding, working in fields that involve providing care for others can be stressful, especially when it includes caring for children in a home-based setting. This is an ORO-certified Set Two training session in the PPLD (personal professional leadership development) core knowledge category. It is held live, online or in-person and allows family child care providers to explore effective and research-based self-care strategies that build self awareness, like body scanning and stress management journaling, as well as healthy brain mapping strategies for developing long term, sustainable self-care practices.
Play, Learn, Connect is a training opportunity where child care providers learn about tech-free materials that support creativity and learning, learn about the importance of play for young children, and connect with other child care providers and resources in their area.
To date, over 140 child care providers have improved their understanding of how young children learn and increased play-based learning opportunities within their programs through engaging in this live, in-person training session offered in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Russian, across multiple Oregon counties, including Washington, Multnomah, and Jackson.
There are also a variety of stand alone, live online LEC (learning environments and curriculum) training opportunities available for child care providers interested in continuing to expand their knowledge of including education across many domains within their family child care settings. For example, Patterns, Positions, and Shapes… oh my! provides a look at ways to support more math concepts like number recognition, geometry, measurement, and patterns in a play-based learning environment. The training session Floor & Furniture Friendly Sensory Activities provides a look at identifying skills children learn through sensory play and ways to balance rich sensory play experiences and keeping the environment free of damage.

Breaking Down Barriers
Everyone is unique! That holds true for family child care providers, as well as the children and families that they serve. The Breaking Down Barriers set of training sessions emphasizes the importance of understanding and valuing all of the layers of influences that make each family and child unique (such as the Set One, FCS session Understanding Family Contexts to Build Partnerships). It also provides tools and opportunities to practice potentially challenging conversations with an inclusive, relationship-building approach (like in the Set Two, FCS session Inclusive Communications for Family Child Care Providers).
